EMILY’s List is endorsing state Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan in an upcoming California special election to succeed Ellen Tauscher, who vacated the seat to take a job with the State Department.
“Joan Buchanan is an effective leader with proven experience in both the public and private sector,” said Ellen R. Malcolm, president of EMILY’s List. “In the state assembly, school board and boardroom alike, Joan has consistently taken on tough situations and turned them around.”
Buchanan, a first-term Democratic state legislator, is locked a competitive special election primary against two more experienced Democratic politicos. Lieutenant governor John Garamendi and state senator Mark DeSaulnier are her two biggest rivals – with Iraq war veteran Anthony Woods as a sleeper candidate.
Buchanan has more than a decade of experience on the Contra Costa County school board, and got on the Democratic radar screen after winning an expensive 2008 Assembly race in an open seat previously held by a Republican.
The all-party special election primary will be taking place on September.1. If no candidate wins a majority of the vote, the two leading vote-getters from each party will face off in a November general election.
