The Post understandably focuses today on the most striking result of a recent poll: Sarah Palin’s falling numbers.
Mike Hucakbee’s camp, however, notes another set of numbers:
Mike Huckabee 26%
Mitt Romney 21%
Sarah Palin 19%
Newt Gingrich 10%
Tim Pawlenty 4%
Jeb Bush 3%
Haley Barbour 1%
Bobby Jindal (vol.) 2%
Charlie Crist (vol.) *
Other/None of these/Would not vote/No opinion 14%
The obvious, and reasonable, conclusion here is that Huckabee and Palin are battling over the same segment of the conservative Republican base, and that as Palin’s fortunes decline, Huckabee’s rise.
The former Arkansas governor hasn’t been terribly successful at breaking through in the invisible Beltway primary, but it’s hard to ignore a number like that one.
