Gibbs says Obama regrets his Gates comments, sort of, and blames the press:
"I think he would regret if realized how much of an overall distraction and obsession it would be" in the press, Gibbs said, adding that the president’s involvement with the issue is probably finished. "I think he’s said what he’s going to say on this."
Obama hasn’t reached out to either Gates or the arresting officer directly, Gibbs said.
He also stressed the president’s support for law enforcement officers, some of whom have expressed dismay at the president’s comments.
"I think the president believes and understands just how hard a job law enforcement is," Gibbs said. "He has great respect for the men and women that keeps us safe."
