Trump set to hold fundraiser for Saccone

President Donald Trump will raise money for Pennsylvania Republican congressional candidate Rick Saccone during a trip to the state next week, according two people briefed on the plans.

A fundraiser is set to take place on Feb. 21, the same day Trump holds a campaign-style rally in Ambridge, Pennsylvania. Saccone is expected to attend the rally, according to several people familiar with his schedule.

Trump’s visit is the latest in a series of steps the White House is taking to boost Saccone, a state representative, ahead of the March 13 special election. Trump appeared with Saccone during a recent visit to a southwestern Pennsylvania manufacturing plant, and Vice President Mike Pence held a rally in Bethel Park earlier this month in which he repeatedly went after Saccone’s Democratic opponent, attorney Conor Lamb. That same day, Pence held a fundraiser for Saccone that netted around $250,000.

Republicans are going all out ensure that Saccone wins. Outside groups are pouring millions of dollars into an expansive media and field campaign. On Tuesday, the anti-tax Club for Growth began airing radio commercials tying Lamb to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who is deeply unpopular in the conservative district.

The House seat Saccone is competing for, Pennsylvania’s 18th district, broke for Trump by 20 percentage points. A GOP loss in the special election could portend a Democratic wave in the November midterms, Republicans worry.
