Trump: ‘I am totally opposed to domestic violence of any kind’

President Donald Trump denounced domestic violence “of any kind” on Wednesday, after facing criticism for being slow to personally address the matter in the wake of spousal abuse allegations leveled against two former White House aides.

“I am totally opposed to domestic violence of any kind. Everyone knows that,” the president told reporters. “It almost wouldn’t even have to be said.”

The president made no mention of the women who have accused his former staffers of abuse.

Trump had not made any appearances or sent any tweets denouncing domestic violence since the allegations against former White House staff secretary Rob Porter became public more than a week ago. Other White House officials in recent days did talk about the issue and said their comments represented the president’s thoughts.

“The president and the entire administration take domestic violence very seriously and believe all allegations need to be investigated thoroughly,” White press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at Tuesday’s press briefing. “Above all, the president supports victims of domestic violence and believes everyone should be treated fairly and with due process.”

Still, advocacy groups and others had called on the president to more forcefully speak out against such violence.

Trump on Friday addressed Porter’s exit, noting that the former aide "says he’s innocent." But he did not mention Porter’s two ex-wives or their accounts of abuse.

David Sorensen, a speechwriter who worked at the Council on Environmental Quality, also resigned after being confronted with allegations of abuse against him.

Over the weekend, Trump, who faced allegations of sexual misconduct from over a dozen women on the campaign trail, appeared to express concerns over revelations of abuse brought on amid the #MeToo movement, lamenting that "Peoples lives are being shattered and destroyed by a mere allegation."

"There is no recovery for someone falsely accused – life and career are gone," Trump tweeted Saturday. "Is there no such thing any longer as Due Process?"
