President Donald Trump on Wednesday lambasted Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) as "so phony" after she acknowledged using a private plane for part of a recent campaign RV tour, a fresh sign that the GOP will seize on the episode in its bid to unseat McCaskill in November.
Trump tweeted that McCaskill "flew around in a luxurious private jet during her RV tour of the state. RV’s are not for her. People are really upset, so phony!"
McCaskill confirmed on Tuesday that she used her private aircraft during two of the three days of a campaign RV tour last month, delighting Republicans who see the misstep as a display of inauthenticity that can boost their nominee, Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley.
"I added some stops with the use of the plane, but I was on the RV so much that the broken drawer drove me crazy," McCaskill said after Washington Free Beacon first reported that her aircraft had followed some of the route of her campaign RV.
Hawley joined the rest of the GOP in pouncing on the episode, telling POLITICO in an interview that McCaskill "can’t stand to be driven on her luxury RV for two days before getting on her luxury plane."
Trump added in his Tuesday tweet that Hawley "should win big, and has my full endorsement." The Missouri race is poised to become one of the most hard-fought contests in the midterms.
McCaskill’s private plane, reported on her most recent annual Senate financial disclosure form as worth upwards of $1 million, does not have a jet engine. The Democrat’s campaign did not immediately return a request for comment on Trump’s Twitter attack.
